Tans are a small rabbit breed that are bred to be active and are known as a "running" breed. They are one of 47 breeds of rabbits recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association. Tans are the stars of the rabbit shows because they are so interesting to watch. They often come to a stop right in front of a camera to pose for pictures, delighting everyone who meets them with their busy curiosity and activity. They are not a breed to sit in your lap for hours of petting but still love human contact, just not as much as docile rabbit breeds.
Averaging about 4 pounds, Tans will live well in a medium size rabbit cage or hutch. We recommend a 24" x 30" + space, and exercise out of the cage.
These Tan rabbits have been entered at their first ARBA sanctioned show, where they were judged as good show/breeding prospects despite their young age. They are worked with on the show table, and handled nearly every day. They are comical characters and are anxious to socialize and show off their athletics or take treats out of your hands. And they will stay put in their cage if that is what they are asked to do but may exercise themselves in their cage if they don't get some time out. We do recommend that Tans get exercise as often as possible, and ours go outdoors for 30 minutes or so most days to run in a small fenced area or on a judging table
There are four colors of Tan rabbits. Here we are offering two blacks which are usually considered the most striking color for a Tan rabbit.
Tans always breed true for color, so unlike most other rabbit breeds, there is no culling of the babies for color. This was important to us in selecting this breed to work with so that we would not have to cull off-color rabbits or relegate them only to pet homes. So these are all show rabbits, but you may purchase one or two as pets if you wish. They are tattooed in the left ear for showing, so even if you decide on a pet now, you could still show it later.
