Tans are a small, energetic rabbit breed and are known as a "running" breed. They are one of 47 breeds of rabbits recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association and are called the "Aristocrats of the Fancy Breeds". Tans are often the stars of the rabbit shows because they are so interesting to watch. They come to a stop right in front of a camera to pose for pictures, delighting everyone who meets them with their busy curiosity and activity. They are not a breed to sit in your lap for hours of petting but still enjoy some human contact, just not as much as the docile rabbit breeds.
Averaging about 4 to 5 pounds, Tans are fairly small rabbits and will live well in a medium size rabbit cage or hutch. We recommend a 24" x 30" + space, and exercise out of the cage. They are easily litter box trained, especially the bucks which just train themselves.
Tans are comical characters and are anxious to socialize and show off their athletics or take treats out of your hands. And they will stay put in their cage if that is what they are asked to do but may exercise themselves in their cage if they don't get some time out. We do recommend that Tans get exercise as often as possible, and ours go outdoors for 30 minutes or so most days to run in a fenced area or on a judging table
There are four colors of Tan rabbits. Black is the most dramatic, Chocolate is the same with brown replacing the black. Blue is a dilute black, and Lilac is a dilute chocolate. All of them have reddish (tan) under bellies and reddish (tan) accents at the nose, neck, ears and tail. I think they should be called "Tan Bellies".
Tans always breed true for color, so unlike most other rabbit breeds, there is no culling of the babies for color. This was important to us in selecting this breed to work with so that we would not have to cull off-color rabbits or send them only to pet homes. So Tans are all show rabbits, but they are beautiful pets too.
